Why is Autonomy Such a Powerful Magnet for Teams? 👇🏽

This week, I'm kicking off a new advisory work with one of the ASX Top 100 companies through Neu21, focusing on designing an effective operating model that empowers teams through autonomy.

It got me thinking: why is autonomy such a powerful magnet? What makes it so appealing, and why do teams fight so hard for it?

I reflected on what autonomy meant for me and the team in my last role as CPTO of Flomatika, where we ventured into the Value Stream Management space. Here's what came to mind:

• 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: We had the freedom to explore different paths.

• 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: We had clear, well-defined guidelines that helped us understand the limits within which we could innovate and make decisions.

• 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸-𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: We had the support to take calculated risks that could lead to innovation and progress. These bets were not random or reckless; they were always in line with the board's risk appetite.

• 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: We had the freedom to pitch our vision and pursue what we believed in.

• 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: We had the freedom to choose our tools, architecture, and processes, continuously improving them as we learned and adapted.

• 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: We had the right to make mistakes, learn, and iterate.

• 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸: We had the privilege of tackling tough problems head-on, not just working on prescribed solutions.

• 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Our rights were always balanced by our responsibilities, and everyone was treated like adults.

• 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽𝘀: We had several feedback loops in place to help course-correct and execute thousands of micro-pivots.

• 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Everyone was connected with their hearts and souls as we embarked on an expedition through these uncharted waters.
