Here are different ways to think about capacity in your delivery ecosystem:

👇

1️⃣ Individual Capacity Measured in hours, skills, and mental space available to a person. This fluctuates daily and varies individual by individual.

2️⃣ Team Capacity (Systemic) Measured by the number of people available, along with their variabilities (skills, experience, availability). Teams function as systems where collaboration and coordination impact overall capacity.

3️⃣ Process Capacity (Systemic) Measured by the volume of work-in-progress (WIP). Controlling WIP is crucial to prevent overloading the system.

4️⃣ Delivery Capacity (Systemic) Measured by throughput or output—how much work gets delivered over a given period. Increasing throughput without sacrificing quality is key to improving capacity.

5️⃣ Service Capacity (Systemic) Measured by lead time and service level—how fast and reliably work is delivered. This is crucial for maintaining trust and meeting customer expectations.

What do you think about these interpretations? How do you measure capacity in your organisation? Individually or systemically?
