The Cognitive Load Theory, which explains how the human brain processes and manages information, provides fascinating insights into why processing information feels harder or easier depending on where we are in our journey.

It discusses 'ELEMENTS'—individual units of information that our brain processes—in our working memory and how these change as we gain expertise.

WORKING MEMORY can hold a limited number of elements at once—only 2-4 when dealing with something new. It can retain novel information for about 20 seconds before it disappears if not rehearsed or transferred to long-term memory.

LONG-TERM MEMORY, in contrast, has no known limits in terms of capacity or duration. Once information is processed and stored there, it can be retained indefinitely and retrieved when needed. It is then processed as a single, consolidated unit (or schema) rather than as separate elements.

The key insight here is that what counts as an 'ELEMENT' is not fixed. It depends on how much related knowledge we have stored in long-term memory.

For an expert, a large chunk of information might be treated as a single element. This is because they have already integrated that knowledge into a familiar schema or structure of meaning. However, for a novice, the same information would be broken down into many smaller, individual elements, making it more difficult to process in working memory.

This difference in how information is perceived and processed explains why experts find complex tasks manageable while novices struggle.

As we learn, we essentially transform multiple interacting elements into manageable chunks, freeing up our working memory to tackle more.
