Family Framework
Raising a loving, united, resilient, responsible, and joyful family amidst the challenges of career and life is an incredibly hard and rewarding mission.
Over the last eight years, we've developed a "family framework" with practices that may inspire others:
-
Family Values: We've created a set of shared values consisting of five core and five extended values. Prominently displayed in our dining room, they fortify our identity and guide our children's raising, playing a key role in significant family discussions and decisions.
-
Long and Short-Term Goals: Our long-term vision spans five years, while short-term objectives are yearly. These goals unite us, providing direction and purpose.
-
Family Budget: We've implemented a structured budgeting system to help us plan and track our financial flow.
๐งน Chores System: Managing a household of five means endless tasks. We've distributed the household activities fairly among us, instilling a sense of responsibility and teamwork.
โ๏ธ Justice System: Designed by the kids, our justice system outlines consequences for deviations from expected behaviour, promoting fairness and accountability.
๐ Family Policies: We have explicit policies for device and internet usage, among other things.
๐ฝ๏ธ Meal Plan: To avoid daily dinner dilemmas, we plan our meals monthly with input from the kids. Our focus is on nutritious, easy-to-prepare dishes, and we involve the kids in cooking, enhancing our bond.
Incorporating these tools and practices has been transformative for our family life. I hope they inspire you in your journey with your loved ones. Engaging in these exercises as a family can clarify expectations, address friction points, surface assumptions, navigate differences, and foster compromises.
These practices can rejuvenate family ties, helping lay a strong foundation for the year ahead, particularly valuable in households with children, making for truly special family moments.
