Picking your sacrifices
I’ve been practising intermittent fasting for years. While 16-8 is my default, I periodically do a prolonged fast, and on the 1st day of this year, I embarked on my first 5-day fast.
Fasting is more than a health practice; it's a form of sacrifice. You give up immediate benefits, pleasures or comfort for long-term gains. Prolonged fasts promote several benefits. They allow the ancient inner wisdom of the body to take over and do its thing.
Benefits include rebooting the immune system, revitalising the gut microbiome, reducing inflammation, some serious fat burning, cellular cleanup through autophagy, enhancing metabolic health, increasing insulin sensitivity, stimulating stem cell production, sharpening cognitive functions, and even some DNA repair!
Pursuing deeper meaning and purpose involves setting goals that require significant sacrifices. Flexing your ability to make sacrifices strengthens your body, mind and soul.
Voluntary sacrifice can improve emotional resilience, spark creativity, and deepen spiritual connections. It helps build good habits, discipline, and character. It leads to personal growth, wisdom, and gives you the strengths necessary to actively engage with life challenges.
Question for reflection: What voluntary sacrifices are you making or planning to make this year? I have chosen to farm ideas, aiming at producing one atomic essay every day of the year. Hopefully, you’ll see regular posts about work, life, flow, value, and well-being.
Why am I telling you this? I’m leveraging Caio Cestari's advice on having accountability partners to help achieve big, audacious goals, and I’m counting on you to partner with me on this journey.
