I'm involved day in, day out, in executive conversations about speed to market. I'm delighted to see how the Australian market is starting to pick up that reducing time to market is not about delivering faster; is about delivering sooner!
To deliver sooner (reduce lead time), the best leverage is to reduce waiting time (commonly observed consuming, on average, about 85% of the lead time).
Here are the top sources of delay, I repeatedly detect in all sorts of value streams I work in:
-
Operations strategy designed to maximise resource efficiency
-
Dependencies (shared services, other teams, specialists or vendors)
-
Too much work-in-progress
-
Team liquidity (match of work and worker)
-
The volume of manual and repetitive work
-
Earlier commitment
